This summer, Target Health Inc., a member of the Nippon Club for 27 years, managed to stay cool, be philanthropic and at the same time participate in the 14th Annual music and dinner cruise presented by the Nippon club in collaboration with the Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (JCCI) of New York. All these services are provided for no fee whatsoever to both young and old.
The cruise set sail from Hornblower Landing at the Hudson River Park, Pier 40 this past Tuesday evening. There was a buzz of excitement and anticipation as passengers boarded the ship and the boat began to depart. The hors d'oeuvre, such as Butterfly shrimp with mango salsa and fresh asparagus tips wrapped in smoked salmon with a light dusting of bonito flakes served during the cocktail reception were delectable. The passengers toasted their glasses while looking out at the spectacular views of New York City. The cruise got off to a fast start with a sea of architectural skyscrapers flashing by. There was the Freedom Tower, the Empire State Building and then suddenly the Brooklyn Bridge! After the reception, the guests took their seats in the dining area while Rebecca Cass, the coordinator of Japanese Chamber of commerce and industry (JCCI) of New York, gave her warm welcome
During the three-course dinner, the diners at each table introduced themselves to one another. Target Health's cultural liaison was sitting next to a wonderful long time philanthropic couple and across from Terumusa Yamada, president of Ad-Boutique, a digital graphics company based in Manhattan and his colleague. Mr. Yamada's clients include the Nippon club. In addition to the magnificent views of the New York Skyline and the Statue of Liberty, there were two lively performances during dinner.
The first performance were the Taiko drums. call Soh-Daiko a Taiko drumming group on the east coast that was established in 1979 in New York. The inspiring repertoire included compositions from the Japanese Shinto music tradition. Also, presented were Taiko arrangements combined with modern compositions from the group members. Next came a dance performance of the Bon Odori, a traditional local Japanese dance also known as the Festival of Souls. The dance is usually performed during the summer around July, around the Obon Festival, which is a Japanese Buddhist custom to honor the spirits of ancestors. Originally a Nenbutsu folk dance to welcome the spirits of dead. The dance varies from each region in Japan. The typical Bon dance consist of people dancing in a circle.
After the performance, the guests were encouraged to learn the Bon Odori style dance and danced to music in a large circle. At the end of the dinner and dancing, it was time for the charity raffle drawing. The raffle prizes included a 4 pairs of round trip tickets to any American Airlines destination, a stay at New York Hilton Midtown or a weekend at Kitano hotel. An iPad mini and Shiseido gift bags. A dining neighbor, Mr. Terumusa Yamada president of AD-Boutiques Inc. in New York City turned out to be the lucky Winner of the night. He won two prizes one of which is the grand prize- a pair of round trip tickets to any American Airlines destination.
